In this guide, I’ll explore seven stylish tile backsplash designs that can elevate your kitchen’s aesthetic, regardless of whether you’re just cooking at home on a weeknight or you’re hosting an elegant dinner party. These backsplash ideas are just scratching the surface—my hope is that these ideas stoke your own inspiration to find the perfect design for your kitchen’s walls.

Tile Design #1: Rounded Vertical Tile Backsplash

Kitchen With Wide Countertop And Backsplash Tiles Remodeled by Hazley Builders | Tile Designs For The Kitchen

In this remodel, we installed a backsplash behind the stove with tile that has a rounded, diamond-shaped pattern. This backsplash above the main cooking space adds a pop of color to the more basic, polished white tile used for the backsplash in the rest of the room. The tile is also oriented vertically, creating contrast with the horizontally-installed tile around it. At the same time, the color of the patterned tile complements the stainless steel appliances, creating a sense of cohesion in the kitchen’s overall color scheme.

Tile Design #2: Clean White Tile

For this remodeling project, our clients wanted a bright and airy kitchen, which we helped create with a kitchen backsplash featuring white tile with white grout. Given the color of the cabinets and countertops, an all-white tile backsplash was the perfect match.

Even if you’re not crazy about an all-white kitchen, this example shows how you can create a consistent style that brings together each kitchen element in a unified remodeling plan.

Tile Design #3: Creative Glass Tile

For this kitchen space, we found that square tiles with four unique colors and patterns could make a bold statement that our client loved. These elegant painted glass tiles reflect light while offering a visual contrast from the white drawers and cabinets.

This design was specifically chosen for this bar space, which is adjacent to the rest of the kitchen. While many homeowners prefer a more neutral aesthetic in the main part of the kitchen, auxiliary spaces like this one can be perfect for creating a distinct sense of style.

Tile Design #4: Gradient Tile

In this remodel, a gradient tile backsplash gives a unique feel to this home’s kitchen. As each tile includes color variation with different shades of white and gray, the wall has the appearance of uneven edges. The gradient tile also features a sense of movement, which spices up the color scheme built around the more traditional solid white used for the cabinets.

Another approach to create a similar effect would be to use a tile material with its own natural and irregular pattern. For example, stone, granite, or marble tiles can cultivate an elegant look without having a single, solid color.

Tile Design #5: Vibrant Accent Backsplash

In this home, we used patterned tile to create a distinct backsplash for the square space behind the stove. The color tones of the tile are complemented by gold hardware throughout the kitchen, including a gold pot-filler that is built directly into the stove’s backsplash for both appearance and convenience.

The beauty of accent tile is that you have almost unlimited options. In working with an interior designer, you can compare dozens of potential options to find the tile material (ceramic, stone, porcelain, etc.), color, pattern, and size that truly resonate with you.

Tile Design #6: Herringbone Tile

Herringbone Backsplash Tile On A Kitchen Wall

Installing tile with a herringbone pattern is one of the most popular choices among homeowners who want to add visual interest to their kitchen. For this remodel, we used white tile with a darker grout, which helped emphasize the herringbone pattern. The darker grout also gives the backsplash a degree of contrast with the light-colored cabinets and countertops.

This way of orienting the tiles shows just how versatile tile is for sprucing up the walls in your kitchen. Even in a small space like this one, the distinct shape of the tile gives the wall more personality and visual appeal. If a herringbone pattern isn’t exactly what you’re looking for, you can achieve a similar dynamic with hexagon tiles or chevron tiles.

Tile Design #7: Wraparound Extended Kitchen Backsplash

Kitchen backsplash tile doesn’t have to occupy a large surface area in order to have a huge positive impact on the room’s aesthetics. This remodel features white tile that extends from a larger wall space (behind the toaster) all the way to the other end of the kitchen counter. The wraparound style creates a sense of continuity in the space.

Some contractors would only put tile in the bigger space, especially since the wraparound backsplash isn’t especially tall. But we think that the added attention to detail makes the whole kitchen feel more complete and compelling.
