Our home additions start at $175,000. The final price depends on the type of addition, whether it includes a bathroom, how much structural work the existing house needs, and the finishes you choose. It depends on the lot. A ground-floor bump-out is usually simpler to build and easier to live through, but it uses yard and can run into setback limits. A second-story addition keeps the footprint and the yard but means new structural work below and a period without a roof over part of the house. Our architect prices both options against your lot and your existing structure so you can decide with real numbers.

Usually, yes. Most additions are built from the outside in, and we keep the existing house sealed off until the new space is weathertight. The disruptive stretch is the connection, when walls open between old and new, and we schedule it so it is as short as possible. A second-story addition is the exception where a temporary move is sometimes worth discussing.

That is the architect’s job. Rooflines, siding, window proportions, trim profiles, and floor and ceiling heights are drawn to continue the original house, and materials are matched or intentionally contrasted rather than approximated. Inside, the goal is that you cannot tell where the old house ends and the addition begins.

Plan on about 3 to 6 months for a typical addition, from design and permitting through construction. The timeline depends on how much structural work the existing house needs. We set the schedule before construction starts and share it with you throughout the project.
