There’s no secret as to why kitchen upgrades are among the most popular types of home improvement projects. A kitchen remodel can enhance your quality of life and add value to your home. Building out your dream kitchen can pay dividends for day-to-day use and when entertaining guests.
The first step in the renovation process is to identify your functional kitchen remodeling needs based on your lifestyle. At the same time, you can start considering your aesthetic preferences and how you want your new kitchen to look and feel.
In this post, I’ll go over some core kitchen design ideas accompanied by examples from our remodeling portfolio. These ideas can serve as food for thought as you refine your vision and plan your kitchen upgrade.
Custom Cabinetry

A tried-and-true way to upgrade your kitchen is with new cabinets designed to your specifications. Optimized for your space, custom cabinetry can eliminate clutter and improve organization. For example, incorporating built-in storage solutions like pull-out pantries and appliance garages helps maximize space in your new kitchen cabinets.
Beyond just their function, you can also select the style and aesthetic of custom cabinets. Many older homes in West Chester have low ceilings, necessitating design strategies to enhance natural light and visual space.
In this remodel, we used bright white cabinets to create a harmonious contrast with the natural wood floors. Although white worked well for this client, warm neutrals such as beige and taupe are becoming popular for cabinetry in kitchen remodels in West Chester, often moving away from stark white.
Open-Concept Kitchen Layout

Kitchen remodeling contractors can help create a layout that enhances function and flow, and one of the most popular layouts is the open-concept kitchen. With this design approach, there’s a direct connection between the kitchen and adjacent spaces, such as a dining room, living room, or breakfast nook.
An open-concept main floor creates a more spacious feel and also provides an ideal area for entertaining friends and family. It can also enable the juxtaposition of different stylistic elements, as in this remodel, where our client wanted a more eye-catching dining space that could flow into the kitchen.
For many homes, creating an open design increases project complexity. Usually, the entire kitchen needs to be remodeled, and the walls around the kitchen have to be removed. If those walls are load-bearing, additional planning is necessary, and permits are typically required for structural changes during kitchen remodeling projects. This can also demand more plumbing modifications and electrical work during the construction process.
Kitchen Island

When space allows, our clients almost always seek out a well-designed island. Adding a kitchen island can provide additional counter space and a cozy area for relaxation. It also creates a focal point for the layout and flow within a kitchen (or in an open-concept design).
You can make the island a seated bar (as in this remodel), or you can focus on its functionality by adding a sink or including a butcher block section. The island can also include quality cabinetry for extra storage.
Modern Appliances

Installing high-quality appliances might seem obvious, but it’s frequently overlooked as a central part of a serious kitchen renovation. In this remodel, we worked closely with our client, ultimately choosing sleek stainless steel appliances. Upgrades here include the extra-large fridge, double ovens, and a built-in mini fridge for wine or extra beverages.
Unique Countertops and Backsplashes

Kitchen countertops and backsplashes influence the look and feel of your kitchen. As a result, these design choices provide an opportunity to give your kitchen its own sense of style and personality.
Countertops are available in various materials, including quartz, marble, and wood, which can significantly alter a kitchen’s appearance. For this remodel, we went with a dark slab that provides a sense of classic elegance (plus grout-free maintenance).
New backsplashes can change the look of a kitchen on a budget, and in this case, we used the same material as the countertop (instead of the more traditional choice of tile). This creates a sense of unity in the space while acting as a conversation piece thanks to its unique look.
Kitchen Design Accents

Kitchen designers know that to transform a space, you need to consider all of the details, including smaller elements and accents. For example, high-quality kitchen fixtures, such as faucets and sinks, can improve functionality and aesthetics. In this remodel, we opted for a brushed metal faucet that complements the sink and appliances.
However, we also embraced contrast through other accents. The bronze pendant lighting keeps the look from being too simplistic, and wood is incorporated into the floors, exposed beams, and range hood to add a more natural-looking component to the overall design.
