Refined Tudor Restoration

Case Study

Hazley Builders developed a design that complemented and preserved the character and architecture of this 1930s Tudor home. The family’s priorities for this whole-home renovation included an overall lighter and brighter feel, a full kitchen renovation, updates to the primary bedroom and bath, and an extensive basement renovation.

We aimed to preserve the timeless features of classic Tudor architecture—exposed wood beams, decorative stone accents, plaster walls, rich oak floors, and paned steel casement curved windows. To enhance the style, we designed a unique front entry vestibule featuring a fully custom arched-top glass and wood door, utilizing the exterior stone arches for seamless integration.

The kitchen design involved expanding the galley footprint by relocating the basement stairs and moving the laundry room to the second floor. To address the narrow layout, we also eliminated a powder room. Opting for gleaming white cabinets not only brightened the original kitchen but also created a striking contrast with the newly installed herringbone-patterned floors and black plumbing and electrical fixtures. To further maximize the functionality and storage options, we helped design shallow cabinetry to create a pantry and appliance garage.

For the basement renovation, we skillfully incorporated the steam pipes as integral components of the interior design, deliberately leaving them exposed and painted to blend with the wall colors. Embracing the Tudor style again, we exposed the stone walls surrounding the fireplace, stairs, and bar. We further emphasized the classic features with wainscoting and millwork details. To ensure the basement had a bright look and feel, we chose white oak-inspired luxury vinyl planks.

Upstairs we expanded the home’s small primary bathroom by removing a linen closet. The expansion allowed for the addition of a double sink and walk-in, curbless shower featuring blue-toned glass tile.
