Smart bathroom with LED smart mirrors and bath

While every element of a bathroom is important, there are few that draw as much attention as the vanity. The vanity is a focal point for both functionality and aesthetics, and choosing the right one can have a profound effect on the final result of a bathroom remodel.

One of the most compelling styles, and one that we frequently recommend, is a modern bathroom vanity. Since interior design terminology can be all over the map, I want to give some specific details about modern bathroom vanities.

In this post, I’ll describe the characteristics of modern bathroom vanities, explain how they’re different from other styles, and review some of the features that you can choose from when selecting a new vanity.

What Makes a Bathroom Vanity Modern?

There’s no universally accepted definition of a modern bathroom vanity. That said, in most cases, a modern design offers a sense of elegance without excessive contrast or extravagance. Some common elements of modern interior design include:

  • Straight, clean lines that typically run horizontally or vertically
  • Natural materials like stone or wood or materials with polished surfaces like porcelain, glass, chrome, stainless steel, or brushed nickel
  • Straightforward and symmetrical geometric shapes
  • A tendency toward more neutral, subtle, or subdued colors

Taken together, these features usually generate a sense of polished minimalism or understated refinement.

What Is the Difference Between Modern and Contemporary Interior Design?

In many other contexts, contemporary and modern are synonyms, but with interior design, that’s not the case. Unlike modern design, contemporary design tends to create a louder look, often embracing contrast, asymmetry, and bolder colors, patterns, and textures.

Contemporary design often tries to make a statement, using more visually assertive elements that some people may find jarring. Of course, not all contemporary design goes that far, but it tends to eschew the more classic, polished, and minimalist feel of modern design.

Can You Put a Modern Vanity in a Traditional Home?

Modern bathroom vanities can work well in almost any home since their refined simplicity gives them a look that blends into many contexts. With more understated colors and patterns, modern bathroom vanities are more aesthetically flexible and adaptable, allowing them to suit most bathroom remodeling projects.

That said, you should always consider the look and feel of the rest of your bathroom, including the walls, flooring, and lighting, to determine whether any specific vanity will complement the overall design.

Different Styles of Modern Bathroom Vanities

Bathroom vanities come in a huge range of styles with distinct features and elements. Some considerations that you’ll encounter when choosing a vanity include:

  • Built-in or freestanding: A built-in vanity is custom-designed so that it can be set into a permanent position in your bathroom space. In contrast, a freestanding vanity is not directly attached to the wall.
  • Positioning: You can opt for a floating vanity that is mounted on the wall, a vanity that sits on legs, or even one that is flush with the floor.
  • Sink number and style: Depending on your space and needs, you can have one sink or two. If you want the sink basin to be visible, you can opt for a vessel sink. If not, you can choose an undermount or drop-in sink.
  • Mirror number and style: If you have a double vanity, you have the option to put up one large mirror or two smaller ones. Mirrors come in various shapes and are available with or without frames and built-in backlighting.
  • Amount and type of storage: Some modern vanities have open shelving under or around the sinks, but a more common look involves a symmetrical arrangement of cabinets and drawers.
  • Wall or backsplash: You’ll want to pick a design for the backing of the vanity that aligns with the modern design sensibility of the vanity itself.

Choosing Durable Materials

Modern bathroom vanities can be made with many different materials, and I suggest choosing materials that will stand the test of time. Unless the bathroom is in a guest room that will get very little use, it’s worth investing in materials that will hold up well with regular use.

Materials that are non-porous and moisture-resistant tend to be more durable in bathrooms, making porcelain, quartz, and stainless steel compelling options. Wood and stone can also work well but may require sealing or treatment to prevent moisture damage.
